Scat-sniffing dog helps save endangered primates

A scat-sniffing dog named Pinkerton may be the best friend ever for a small, highly elusive group of endangered monkey and gibbon species now scrambling for survival in the vanishing forests of a remote Chinese mountain range. The high-energy Belgian Malinois is a critical player in efforts to preserve the two species.

of Biology

Evolutionary biologist David C. Queller, PhD, was installed Oct. 16 as the Spencer T. Olin Professor of Biology in Arts & Sciences in a ceremony in Holmes Lounge.

Ross Brownson, PhD, professor of medicine and of social work, has been named president-elect of the American College of Epidemiology.

Video: A collaboration of hands and minds

New York-based artist James Siena recently served as the Arthur L. and Sheila Prensky Visiting Artist at Island Press, the nationally known print shop in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts. Siena spent a week in the studio, working with students and faculty to create a trio of large-scale prints.

Brown School celebrates World Food Day

The Brown School commemorated World Food Day Oct. 16 by holding a lunch in Goldfarb Commons and a discussion afterward. Students were given “money” based on their random selection as being from rich, poor or moderate-income countries. The students could gain additional money by pooling funds with others. With the money, students purchased food representing those countries.

Funding opportunities
for student projects

Students are invited to submit proposals for grant money from the Women’s Society of Washington University (WSWU) to support projects or activities that benefit the university community. Each fall, WSWU awards grants ranging from $300 to $2,000. The submission deadline is Wednesday, Oct. 31.

Men’s soccer tops Principia

The men’s soccer team improved its record to 8-4-1 with a 3-0 non-conference win over Principia College Oct. 18. The Bears face No. 16 University of Rochester at 7:30 p.m. (ET) Friday, Oct. 26, in Rochester, N.Y., before traveling to Cleveland, Ohio, to play Case Western Reserve University at 1:30 p.m. (ET) Sunday, Oct. 28.
